Tatted Top Hat Pattern

Reposting here what I posted by request on the InTatters forums: How to make the little tatted top hats.

Tatted Top Hat Pattern (Size 10 thread)

Round 1: This will be a 5-petal flower with 4 regular rings and 1 Split Ring: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2

Round 2: [SR: 3 – 3 & 3 – 3, CH: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2], * [R: 4 – 4 – 4 – 4, CH: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2, R: 3 – 3 – 3 – 3, CH: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2]* repeat between *’s around, close and finish round.

Round 3: In this round, the small rings will attach to middle of the chains and the large rounds will straddle the V created where a ring and 2 chains join. *[R: 3 – 2 – 4 – 2 – 3, CH: 3 – 4 – 3, R: 3 – 3 – 3 – 3, CH: 3 – 4 – 3] * Repeat around and close.

Round 4: With my hat form, this is the last row of the top flat of the hat. Attach rounds to the V again: *[R: 3 – 2 – 3 – 2 – 3, CH: 3 – 3 – 3]* Repeat, close.

Rounds 5 – 9: Repeat the same pattern as Round 4. However, work Round 5 at 90 degree angle to the edge of Round 4, and then Rounds 6 thru 9 flat with Round 5 – creating a cylinder.

Round 10: *[R: 4 – 3 – 4 – 3 – 4, CH: 3 – 2 – 2 – 3]* Repeat around and close

Round 11: *[R: 2 – 2 – 3 – 2 – 2, CH: 2 – 2 – 2, R: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2, CH: 2 – 2 – 2]* Repeat around and close

Round 12(final row): *[R: 2 – 2 – 3 – 2 – 2, CH: 2 – 2 – 2 – 2]* Repeat and close

Once lace is finished, fit to form and apply stiffening agent.

Hat Band Pattern(Size 20 thread)

Clover consisting of: [R: 3 – 3 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 3, R: 3 – 3 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 3 – 3, R: 3 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 3 – 3], CH: 3 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 3, R: 3 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 2 – 3, CH: 3 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 3

Repeat around. End picots of sides of clover and sides of ring join. Last ring should join first clover, so it makes a band.

This is as close as I’ve gotten to a good fit on the outside of the hat. Looks nice when beaded.

    1. You're welcome! Considering how frequently it's been repinned on Pinterest, I figured might as well! My first pattern, which is why it's so simple hehe Would love to have something floral and intricate and awesome? But that is probably above my skill set right now :D

  3. Thank you for sharing your AWESOME pattern with us! Can't wait to make one. I think I saw on Pinterest that you needle tatted this. What were the finished dimensions of the hat?

    1. You're welcome. I hope it works out for everyone. It is my first pattern so I reworked it on the fly every time I made it(I was an insane string puller at first...)

I don't actually HAVE one of the hats, they've all gone to live with someone else. I can approximate based on my form.

The top flat of the hat is about 3 7/8"
Height is about 3 1/4" from bottom edge of brim to top
The brim is about 1 1/4"-1 1/2" in a band, so the overall width from brim edge to edge is probably around 6 1/2 to 6 7/8"?

If I were doing this all over again, I would probably build the form before I worked out the counts on the tatting. It was a pain in the butt to make the form, and really it was a pain to figure out the stitch counts too? But figuring out the stitch counts was less messy and didn't involve glue :D

    2. Thanks, Amalie! I appreciate the info. : )

I suppose if upsizing the hat to fit someone's head, the tatting would probably need to be supported by a wire frame.

    3. I would say, yes. They are not particularly sturdy. There are ways to make them quite stiff, but too much stiffening affects the look of the lace.

I really wouldn't know how to work a wire frame into it. I'm sure someone could but I'm still pretty amateur

  5. I recently finished another hat in pink size 20 thread. Finished size was 5"wide and 2.5" tall. https://beforeourtime.shutterfly.com/715 I have calculated that it takes about 15 hours to needle tat, block and trim these hats.

The blue hat is Size 10. 6"wide by 3"tall.

Thanks again, Amalie, for your fun pattern.

I have diagrams for the pattern that I can send to you Tia. Just send me an email.
